Throwback Thursday :Jem
Glamour and glitter, fashion and fame! Jem is truly outrageous. Truly, truly, truly outrageous. What’s even more outrageous is that to this day I can sing the entire opening theme song by heart, on command. It’s taking everything in me not to type it out right now. Ha! Don’t worry, I’ll refrain. Jem was my absolute favourite cartoon as a kid. Just ask my Mom. She and the rest of my family were privy to the Jem performances I would put on in our living room where I used a turkey baster as a microphone. Oh yeah. I was that kid. What ever happened to that Jem cassette tape (omg… a cassette tape is a throwback all in itself) I’ll never know but if I were to venture a guess it would be that I listened to it so many times that it eventually turned to dust. Single tear.
I just had an epiphany. Glamour and glitter? Fashion and fame? Maybe drop the fame part, but that’s me! Did I become who I am because of my incessant Jem watching? Was fashion and beauty embedded so deeply into my subconscious that I developed those interests because of Jem? Awesome overload. I’m kidding. Obviously! I’m not that cray cray friends! Well, maybe a little…
What brought up this trip down childhood cartoon memory lane? My mom sent me a little treat in email form last night. Holt Renfrew is stocking a limited edition collection of high-end fashion dolls, brought to us by Hasbro and Integrity Toys, based on my fave 80’s cartoon Jem and The Holograms! These nostalgic retro dolls pay tribute to the series and the original doll line, which might I add I had the Jem, Kember and Misfit Jetta dolls. Currently they’re only offering Classic Jem (centre), Hollywood Jem (top right), Jerrica Benton (top left), Synergy (bottom right) and Rio Pacheco (bottom left) models but promise more are to come in future. I feel like I’ve died and gone to childhood cartoon heaven. Before you rush out determined to buy one please note, they ain’t cheap! At Holt Renfrew they retail for $125 CAD. Very pricey but on the other hand they are collectors items. If you’re a die hard Jem fan like myself, it may be a worthy investment.
If you could pick one, which would you buy? I’d choose Classic Jem (pictured in the centre). It’s how I’ll always remember my beloved cartoon leading lady.
