Matte About You
Why do I have the sudden urge to sing Ruby Soho by Rancid? Oh right, because MAC Cosmetics has just released RiRi Woo, a limited edition must have version of their cult classic matte red lipstick Ruby Woo (one of my all time favourite lipsticks) remixed by Rihanna herself. Even more bold than a stand alone red lip, a matte red lip brings a certain je ne sais quoi to the table. It’s sexy, bold, mysterious and screams timeless, classic glamour from the top of its bright red imaginary lungs. When donning this bold lip statement all eyes will be on you so one must own the heck outta those lips.
The beauty of RiRi Woo, and Ruby Woo respectively, is that the shade works on all skin tones, which is one of the biggest challenges Rihanna faced while collaborating with MAC Cosmetics to create this lipstick. She’s been quoted saying, “It’s difficult to get a red lipstick that beats Ruby Woo because it works on every skin tone. I had so many different samples to choose from and so many different colors underneath— blue, yellow, orange and pink bases. And I got to pick the one that worked, and I tried it on all my friends to make sure it worked on all of our skin tones.” Tested by Rihanna’s crew!?! The lipstick it literally stamped with her approval.
Without having personally tried RiRi Woo, at first glance I can tell you they definitely appear to have differences. Again, I won’t know until I try it, but RiRi Woo looks to be a cool matte red tone vs. the Ruby Woo that I know to be warmer with less blue undertones. I have every confidence that neither option will disappoint as MAC Cosmetics is notoriously known for their quality, especially when it comes to lipstick. Available exclusively online as of today May.2, head to maccosmetics.com to order as it’s sure to sell out in a flash. Be patient! The site is very busy today but my RiRi Woo order has just been placed. Yay!

Hydrated lips is an absolute must when wearing matte lipstick. If you’re a dry, chapped lips sufferer (like most of us) then it’s best to take all necessary precautions before applying this lipstick because the last thing you want is to highlight said cracking lips, which I can say from personal experience looks and feels terrible. Thus, your first step is exfoliating your lips. You don’t need any fancy products for this. I simply use a toothbrush to lightly brush my lips ensuring that all dry pieces have said sayonara.
Prime, prime, prime! Matte lipstick in itself isn’t a creamy formulation and doesn’t smooth across ones lips with the greatest of ease. Plus, once you have the lipstick on, you want longevity. Before applying my Ruby Woo lipstick, I use MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Lip. It’s a colour free base that adds the perfect amount of moisture to help the matte colour glide on. (Pic #1)
Line your smackers. This is where precision work comes into play. Using a lip brush, line lips with a thick coat of the lipstick taking your time as it’s crucial to not colour outside the lines. You’re in no rush and in order to achieve a polished look and skilled shape the lines need to be flawless. Normally I’d use a matching lip liner but with matte colour (Ruby Woo in-particular) I find the perfect match is the lipstick itself. (Pic #2)
Fill’er up! Again, using a lip brush, connect the dots so to speak and fill in the missing areas with bright red colour making sure to freshen up the already made lipstick railroad tracks, if you will, but like before be careful to stay inside the lines. (Pic #4)
That’s it! Your pout should stay put and only require minimal touchups throughout the day/night. Unless of course you’re in some kind of insane food eating contest that involves no hands and diving head first into multiple pies. Even then I’d be interested to see how it holds up!
